This is the majestic USS NORTH CAROLINA  stands in the Cape Fear River directly across from the historic downtown Wilmington, NC. The flag, resplendent in red, white and blue, flies from the back of the USS Diligence, a Coast Guard Cutter ship that makes Wilmington, NC, its home port.

When commissioned on April 9, 1941, the USS North Carolina was considered the world’s greatest sea weapons at the time. The first of ten “fast battleships” to join the fleet in World War II, the North Carolina was nicknamed “Showboat” because of her impressive appearance during sea trials. Today she is an impressive living memorial to all the men and women who served on her decks in the Pacific.
