Tugs and other boats were working  across Masonboro Inlet this week to install pipe that will be used during a beach nourishment project. Great Lakes Dredge & Dock boats and equipment are at Wrightsville Beach, moored on Banks channel. The 220 foot-dredge will be used to excavate sand from Banks channel for beach nourishment on both Masonboro Island and Wrightsville Beach.

The cutter has 1,900 horse power and the total power on the dredge is 11,300 horse power, according to their company Web site. Surfers, boaters and beachgoers were being cautious of the heavy equipment operating both in the water around Masonboro Inlet and on both islands.
