Fourth of July

“Standing with quiet dignity and majesty across the river from downtown Wilmington, NC, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA beckons visitors to walk her decks and envision daily life as well as fierce combat that her crew faced in the Pacific Theater during World War II.” (Taken form the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA’s website. Please visit the website for more fascinating information on the history and heritage of this Memorial.)

North Carolina was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon. Armed with nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets and twenty 5-inch/38 caliber guns in 10 twin mounts, North Carolina proved a formidable weapons platform.

Various events are held at the memorial including the annual 4th of July fireworks display from the adjacent battleship park. A Roll of Honor in the Wardroom lists the names of North Carolinians who gave their lives in service in all the branches of the military during World War II.
