Fishing at Fort Fisher

The beach near the historic site of Fort Fisher, located in Kure Beach on the southernmost tip of Pleasure Island, is the only natural rocky coastline in North Carolina. The beach rock pictured here,  coquina outcrop, is a unique feature of the southern coast. One of the last remaining coquina outcrops on the eastern seaboard, these rocks are from an old Pleistocene headland. Composed of beach sediment cemented together with seashells or coral, it was used in years past as a building material for homes and even forts, because it was good at absorbing cannon fire.

This is one of the best spots in the area for surf fishing, if you are sure footed enough to manage the slippery rocks.
