The 2011 Azalea Festival in Wilmington North Carolina included a street fair downtown, along the Cape Fear River, complete with a magnificent firework display Saturday night.

Every year in April, Wilmington, North Carolina hosts a huge southern-style festival in honor of the azalea, which blooms profusely around here.

The festival includes “Belles” who are costumed in authentic Civil War Era dresses, complete with pantaloons and parasols. These young women, who are nominated by The Cape Fear Garden Club, serve as hostesses and guides for The Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour. They also participate in many activities of the North Carolina Azalea Festival. They are stationed all around town in the beautiful gardens of our city.

In 1969, seven high school aged girls dawned the antebellum dresses for the first time. This year there were nearly 130 beautiful belles at the festival.

This is a view of the historic New Hanover County Courthouse’s clock tower from the corner of Third and Market Street.

The red brick  New Hanover County Courthouse was built in 1892. The Queen Anne style building was designed by A.S. Eichberg of Savannah, Georgia, and was built for a total cost of $72,000. It is 110 feet tall, and has a Victorian Gothic appearance featuring an awesome clock tower.

Reportedly occupied by ghosts by many employees through the years, it was tested by Eastern Paranormal, who has  classified it as having both a residual haunting and an intelligent haunting.

The courthouse was renovated in 1986 and was rededicated as a Visitor’s Center  in 1988.

The North Carolina Azalea Festival is held in April every year in Wilmington, NC. The Festival is a celebration of Wilmington’s exceptional artwork, gardens, rich history and culture.  It is a grand party, southern style, that includes entertainment, a parade, a street fair, a circus, several concerts, pageantry, and of course, authentic southern belles in a variety of pretty costumes.
